Young Englishman Michael Dodman, aka Huxley, first burst onto the scene in 2009 with his Sassanidis EP on Cécille Numbers. What’s followed has been a string of deep cuts on labels such as Tsuba, Fear of Flying and indeed Cécille, earning him respect in all the right circles. For an ‘up & coming’ artist, Huxley’s productions boast an air of sophistication beyond his years and his latest on Spanish imprint Raw Cutz is a prime example of that.

'Touch & Reach' is deep house with a nod to the classic US garage sound that has obviously influenced Dodman. A simple lush chord pattern and big garagesque bassline run throughout the track creating a groovy yet laid back vibe. The soulful harmonies and spoken word vocals from Sanna intertwine with the chords, further adding to the classic house vibe. A wash of hi hats drive the track on, but it’s momentum never exceeds cruising speed. The pinpoint production really brings out the warmth and smooth textures in the track, just how authentic deep house should sound.

Up first on remix duties is in demand UK house duo Bearweasel, delivering a killer - much more dance floor orientated - 10 minute workout. A jaunty hook plays off some lo-fi percussion, delayed synth stabs and clever kick work resulting in an infectious groove. Its not until after the drop, half way through the track, that some low toms enter the mix providing a bouncy bassline. Vocal free and more rugged and tracky than the original, it’s one for a clued up crowd. It will do some damage in the club that’s for sure.

Raw Cutz head honcho Andrés Bela provides the aptly titles Raw Cutz Edit, which retains the same vibe as the original. The most obvious change is to the bassline, which is reduced to a single note. Vocals still in tact and a subtle variation to the chord pattern, it’s still elegantly deep if a little more subtle that the original.

Rounding up the package, Andrés Bela teams up with the Andre Torquato Project. In the same vain as the Raw Cutz Edit, it’s a little more subtle than the original and could be considered more of a re rub than a remix. A subby kick dominates the bottom end leaving the synth and vocals to float along in the mid.

All in all, another solid release from the deep house upstart who’s gaining momentum with every release.
