Italy's MiniCoolBoyz shuffled onto the mainstage of techno in April, with their explosive SCI+TEC Digital Audio debut EP ‘You’.
The duo’s first release on Dubfire’s label since the US techno DJ proclaimed them “future stars of electronic music” [in a Beatportal interview], captured the techno zeitgeist perfectly, and the sound of its label head.
It is no wonder then that the MiniCoolBoyz seek to relight the EP's huge percussive-driven groove 'Rimmer Man' once more, with a sparkling new remix (out today) from Venice newcomer Marka T.
"This remix is a great rework of one of our most popular tracks," said Angelo Manicone from MiniCoolBoyz. "Marka T managed to express the dancefloor hummer mood of our minimal techno style perfectly with this version."
His rework breathes new life into the original's rim-mad centerpiece - it’s fast, dirty, and pleasingly fuel-injected, the kind of insane fist-pumping techno rhythm that Dubfire might drop after a toe-curling build up come 4AM. A techno bulldozer, if ever there was one.
There is also a new bonus track called 'Bounce' on the same release. Unexpectedly sensible, the cut is a further refinement and counterpoint to the MiniCoolBoyz' tough, unfettered rhythms that have so far landed on the likes of Nic Fanciulli’s Saved Records and Italy’s Amazing Records.
"'Bounce' is a track dedicated to our fans," explained MiniCoolBoyz' Michele Colombo. "On the cut we used some dark vocal samples with massive snares and a powerful bassline, and we think it'll be perfect for the new parties of 2011."
The bassline on 'Bounce' is a sleazy, wheezy, pulsating monster. It pushes the track's analogue drum rolls and stripped back house beats down a straight path, before a cavernous reverb-laden breakdown lumbers onto the horizon pulling the rhythm out from under itself.
For a while the MiniCoolBoyz leave the dancefloor suspended, as if frozen in mid-air by a spell, immobilized, waiting for fireworks, as the groove is rebuilt out of individual drum hits and vocal mutterings before continuing along as though nothing had happened at all.
A purposeful anti-climax, it has a powerful hypnotizing effect, and proves that there could be more to MiniCoolBoyz than meets the bassbin.
