Tevo Howard - What Is Noise? (PERMVAC0611)

Growing up in Chicago, when House Music was at its peak and having a father being a blues artist (Rick Howard also sometimes lends his voice to productions of Tevo) and a brother, who is a DJ it was no surprise that Tevo Howard got into music at an early age. So he started spinning record throughout various clubs in Chicago when he was only sixteen, but it was not before 2005 that he started his own productions and two years later his own imprint Beautiful Granville Records.

The releases on BGR showed his significant work consisting of raw analog beats paired with a great sense for melodies, dirty synth basslines, strings and piano stabs to keep the spirit of early 80's Chi-Town records alive. Soon Tevo's music caught the attention of house music lovers on both sides of the Atlantic and brought him releases with European house labels such as Rush Hour and Rebirth, which helped to spread his name to a wider audience.

The "WHAT IS NOISE?" EP is his first release with Permanent Vacation. What initially started as a remix request lead to the beauty of four originals, which show the whole variety of Tevo Howard's sight on todays House Music. Sometimes in life things come together, that are meant to be.

No Regular Play - Serious Heat EP (NO19015)

Canada's hottest musical imprint, No.19 Music, returns with a stunning new single from Wolf & Lamb players No Regular Play, backed with remixes from the on-fire Art Department and awesome Shaun Reeves. Jonny White's No.19 Music label has had quite a year. Whilst only releasing 6 singles during 2010 the imprint has truly established itself as a hotbed for quality underground dance music, hooking up with the likes of Jimmy Edgar, Ripperton, Soul Clap and now No Regular Play. It hasn't hurt that White himself has been behind one of the most talked about acts of the year, Art Department, recording alongside friend and production partner Kenny Glasgow, another No.19 Music stalwart.

Add to this the incredible response to the labels other homegrown talent such as Teeloo and Nitin and its clear why No.19 has been on everyone's lips this year. For its latest musical endeavor the label looks to Brooklyn based duo Greg Paulus and Nick DeBruyn aka No Regular Play to deliver the superb 'Serious Heat EP'. Paulus and DeBruyn are childhood friends from the streets of Minesota, who both moved to NYC in the mid noughties to further their musical ambitions. They are best known for their outstanding releases on the uber cool Wolf + Lamb imprint and can be found DJ'ing regularly at the labels infamous parties.

The latest No Regular Play release kicks off with the original version of 'Serious Heat', an incredibly hypnotic yet musical slice of deep slo-mo house that layers tight vocal loops and delay drenched horns to immense effect. This is a record that really defies genre classification with its futuristic retro sound and heartfelt soul, No Regular Play have really hit the mark here. The second original comes in the form of 'Walkin (Next to Me)', a deep and brooding slab of atmospheric electronica that rides on a bed of superb sub bass from beginning to end. Again NRP's use of tightly looped vocals and horns create a richly entrancing vibe that is truly unique and keeps you locked into their groove, class stuff.

The first of the two remixes sees Jonny White join forces with Kenny Glasgow for another Art Department excursion. The duo take on 'Serious Heat', stripping things back and rebuilding it into an incredible tapestry of spine tingling pads, old school drum loops, horns, organ lines and bumpin bass. At the moment people are expecting a lot from Art Department and this remix meets all expectations, simply brilliant. The package closes with fellow Wolf + Lamb artist and Visionquest man Shaun Reeves taking the reins and reworking 'Walkin (Next to Me)' into the model of his own image.

Upping the tempo Reeves creates a driving floorfiller that manages to inject additional energy whilst not losing any of the soul, the use of the vocals is spot on and all in all he delivers a mix that is a perfect closing opus to this superb package. No Regular Play have turned out a superb single for a label that are truly on the hot list at the moment, throw in remixes from such in demanded and hyped production outfits as Art Department and Shaun Reeves and you have an undoubted winner...

Deepchild - Stadtkind (TRAPEZ115)

After good feedback from people such as Kiko, Orde Meikle (SLAM), Renato Cohen and Patrick Pulsinger for Deepchild´s stunning production, Deepchild moved from Australia to Berlin and recorded his first tracks there for Trapez. Influenced by his performance at Trapez label night at Berghain and coming to terms with all the new influences he now has 3 new tracks for Trapez.

Stadtkind” is a soulful vocal track in a stop and go manner, it sees Deepchild aka Rick Bull singing adding elctronic sounding sequences that provide the track with the edgy character that makes Trapez tracks different.

This Is A True Story” is a Detroit flavoured techno track, much more on the techno trip than recent tracks of his. We are not saying it is techno for the sake of it, but we would say it has the pumping character the track needs to put across the theme which unfolds in this special track.

This track has instant recognition going for it twists and turns the vocals over and over again and makes them the theme of the track.

Sometimes when they are down pitched they sound like the vocals of Jimi Hendrix sometimes more like the voice of an alien.

Deepchild definitely has this track going in the footsteps of cool mind-bending music and we assume the Berlin dance floors will thank him for that as we think it is touching base which what is crazy and warped out there.

The third track on the EP is the deep and grinding track called “Daddy”. We hope that this track does not relate to the relationship to his Dad, because the psychedelic funk note it carries is more intergalactic than earthly bound. This is a hell of a funky track full of soul... sounds as if Rick is playing all of them live... it has such a amazing flow and it is so natural, it could be done on the breakfast table between frying some scrambled eggs, boiling hot coffee and french toast. This is hot shit!

The bonus remix comes by Autodeep. They have already remixed Deepchild before for Trapez once and again they did a great job. Autodeep´s remix of Stadtkind is a cool Chicago mover with naive acoustic percussion details, going really strong through it's hypnotic beat programming.

Santorini - Little Helpers 12 (LITTLEHELPERS12)

Little Helpers is a conceptual digital label courtesy of Andrew Rasse (a.k.a. Butane) and Sean O'Neal (a.k.a. Someone Else) launched in December 2009. Each track is a strong, reduced groove-tool aimed to satisfy the increasing number of digital DJs. Much like the traditional lockgroove vinyl, these tracks are suitable for looping, editing and layering.

Yet at the same time, each track has enough variation to stand on its own. That is, each tune lies somewhere between a full track and a DJ tool - focusing solely on the rhythm or a singular idea rather than extraneous arrangements.
